ILLIAM4 WOFFORD:Wofford Vol. Zelma Price
William Wofford (4) is referred to in records of Prince Georges Co., Md. as William Wofford, Jr.)
26 March 1726, will of i2John Bradford, of Prince Georges Co., Md. (proved 11 May 1726), shows two tracts of his lands on Rock Creek as then being occupied by i2 William Mackcoy (McCoy) and William Wofford, Jr. (ARCHIVES, MD
Note that William Wofford (5) herein stated that (Page 8) he was born 25 Oct. 1728, near Rock Creek in Prince Georges Co., Mc.)
i2William Wofford member of church in Rockville, Md., 1727, (ANDREA MS., P28) Rockville in present Montgomery Co., formed 1776, from Frederick):. which was formed in 1748, from Prince Georges Co.) (It is possible that this reference is to William Wofford, Sr.)
This William Wofford (4) was in S. C. by 1752 (appears to have been in Maryland, 1751). This was long before the "five brothers", his nephews, came to S. C. He or his son William was a Colonial Soldier of S. C., 1752-most likely the son. (ANDREA, p. 33)
William Wofford (4) was an appraiser of estate of i2Hugh McDonald in 1762, and of i2Thomas pendley in 1723. (ANDREA MS. p. 27, 28
A number of early land grants (prior to the Revolution) were issued to men named WOFFORD, and it is difficult to identify each of them, and particularly difficult to identify the several men named William Wofford. They were all closely related, and all owned land in the same general area in South Carolina.
It seems definite that the following record applies to this William Wofford (4)
6 April, 1773, William Wofford a plat on warrant for lands on Crawford Creek, on the South Pacolet River, by lands of i2Abigail Terrill, and by vacant land. Surveyed 8 March, 1774, by i2Zachariah Bullock (ANDRES, MS., P. 4)
(See other records herein)
(South Carolina was originally divided into four Colonial Counties, one of which was Berkeley Co. A movement was begun about 1765 to divide the province into seven districts, but these seven districts seem not to have officially functioned until some few years later From this Colonial County of Berkeley, one of those seven districts called "Ninety-six (96) District", was created. Within those seven districts were sections or areas called "counties", and in this Ninety-six District were two such sections or areas called "Union County and "Spartanburgh County". These are now referred to as "old or original Union County" and "old or original Spartanburgh County".
Most of the early land grants shown for Wofford are shown to be in Craven County (one of said four original counties). Those lands were actually located in said Berkeley Co., but being located in the Berkeley-Craven area in which for many years the county lines were indefinite, these grants, as well as the grants for many others, were issued for lands shown to be in said Craven Co.,)
(This William Wofford (4) is not one of the "five brothers" referred to concerning SC Wofford, but he is their uncle.
Beyond a doubt, this is the William Wofford, "the rich Tory", who is spoken of by i2Ensign Campbell in his diary, wherein he states that at the house of William Wofford they (he and his troops) obtained an abundance of necessary refreshment the i2William Wofford from whom so many Wofford descendants shy away.
Well, let the descendants of William Wofford of the "five brothers"be now at peace, for William Wofford, "the rich Tory", was in truth not their ancestor, although he was by descendants of the "five brothers" projected into the picture of the "five brothers", and then vehemently denied by them as being "a rich Tory".
The will of William Wofford (4) (signed by mark) is dated 28 March, 1787. He states that he is of Union Co., S. C., but formerly of North Carolina. To wife Abigail his entire estate for life, and then to daughter, Rebeccah (some claim name is Rachel but all records we have state name is Rebeccah), who is named the executrix. One shilling each to "my oldest children": i2Absalom Wofford, i2Hannah Marchant, i2Elizabeth Rhodes, and i2Mary Brian. Wit. by i2Jeremiah Wilson, i2Ambrose Yarborough, and i2 Thomas Todd. (In Will Box 1 #9)
Note: Statement as to "my oldest children" may have included only those by the second wife who had not moved from his section of the state, or were not dead. We note that, with the exception of his son Benjamine and daughter Margaret, all of his children who appear to have been born by his second wife are named in the will. These may be "my oldest children". Son Benjamin appears to have already moved far away, and daughter Margaret was dead. None of his children who appear to have been born by the first wife are named in his will.

buried in the Wofford Cemetery, Pilot Grove, MO. at the foot of the grave of
her son, John Smith Wofford. There is such a grave---a very old one---unmarked
save for a sandstone at head and foot. An enormous pine tree is growing in the
center of the grave. She was probably the first person to be buried in this
cemetery.

William G. Wofford, a farmer of Stewart County is the son of James and Elizabeth (Wofford) Wofford. The
father was a native of North Carolina, and in childhood was taken to Georgia, where he lived till 1811 when he came to Stewart County and married Miss Wofford who was also born in the same state. For a livelihood he followed farming. He was magistrate fourteen years and surveyor of the county twenty. Both held to the doctrines of the Methodist Episcopal Church. The father lived to the age of seventy-five; the mother died at fifty-three. William was born in Stewart County in 1826, raised on the farm and received but little schooling. At the age of twenty-one he began his career as a farmer and has since followed that calling. In 1850 he married Martha E. Andrews. To this marriage five children were born, four of whom, together with his wife, were taken away by scarlet fever. Nine years later he was married to Sallie E. Blanton, by whom he had six children. Husband and wife belong to the Methodist Episcopal Church. Like his father he is a supporter of the Democratic party, having cast his first vote for Elisha Dawson. He has made considerable financial advancement, notwithstanding many reverses.
Notes for MARTHA E. ANDREWS:
