Civil War Spy for Confederate Army.
Melissa Walker McCrea was a tall young woman, 6'2'' in height. She was very slender from the photo that I have of her. Her hair was very dark and she was quite attractive. She was very independent and I have reason to believe she did pretty much as she wanted.
She was a spy for the CSA and she rode alone often to deliver messages to soldiers in Little Rock, Arkansas. When she learned a brother of hers Irvin Barton had died in Jefferson Barracks Prison near St. Louis. She drove a buckboard wagon to Rolla from Salem, Missouri. There she boarded a Frisco Train to St. Louis. Irvin had been buried 3 days and she had his body taken up and she brought him back to Salem, by herself, so that he could be buried with his family.
Melissa was captured 3 times by the Federals and the last time was put in prison in St. Louis. She was paroled to her Aunt Ross, who lived in Illinois. She was to stay there until the end of the war. It didn't take Melissa long to make her way back to Salem and again she was crossing enemy lines and carrying information.
THE SALEM POST, SALEM, MO., THURSDAY, MAY 10, 1952
YESTERYEAR FIFTY YEARS AGO ---- 1912
The Salem Monitor, May 9, 1912
Memorial: Col. J. E. Organ, Editor, Monitor, Dear Sir and Friend: I am sending you this as a reminder of fifty years ago---"Lest we forget----Lest we forget." That isn't possible however, for those of us who went through these miserable prison experiences. Yourself and Miss Walker, (Aunt Melissa McCrea) were there with my father, T. J. Higginbotham; when he died, and your father, Uncle Jamie Organ, came up with a patrolled prisoner from there, T. J. Rankin, by name (I have never seen him since) to tell us the misfortune that had befallen us.
I intended to come to Salem this anniversary and get Roxa McCrea to come over to your home and talk it all over---so many years I couldn't bear to speak of it, or our other bereavements connected with the war. I don't mean financial losses, I never lost a minute's sleep on that account---didn't start Out in life calculating to have pockets in my shroud, but am greatly disappointed not getting to come and have that Confederate reunion--but am glad to feel improving, have had some lung and hear complication and then a siege of typhoid fever. With best wishes for yourself and family and all other connected with us in those never to be forgotten days. I remain sincerely your friend, Mary Higginbotham Johnson.
The above letter was written by Mrs. Johnson on the 50th anniversary of her father's death. He died in McDowell's college military prison in St. Louis, April 30, 1862. I was captured at West Plains, Mo., in March 1862 and was in McDowell's college prison at the time of Mr. Higginbotham's death. A few days before I was taken prisoner I was scouting in the vicinity of the old Higginbotham home, now owned and occupied by Mrs. Johnson, 8 miles west of Salem, only one man with me, and we watched from the timber west of the farm a company of Federal soldiers looting the Higginbotham home. They took nearly all his personal property and took him a prisoner and sent him to St. Louis where he died. I regretted that I did not have my company of over 100 fighters with me when I saw those Yanks. What fun we could have had between the Higginbotham home and Salem

THE SALEM NEWS, SALEM, MO., MONDAY JUNE 21, 1965
SUGAR AND SPICE BY MARGARET VICKERY
One of Salem's most beloved old time citizens, Miss Roa McCrea, came home to Dent County last week for a visit with old friends before leaving Rolla where she has made her home with a sister, Mrs. John East, for the past forty years, to go live in St. Louis with relatives. Mrs. East died recently.
Old timers will remember Roxa best when she was a young girl and the home place was a little house on the Rolla cut-off road, across from McGrath's. From here Roxa grew up and as a young girl clerked in the old Butler-Vernon Mercantile for twenty-five years. For 4 1/2 years she made hats, styled them from straw, wire, and fancy ribbons and buttons and bows, in the Virginia Hogel Millinery Shop.
When Roxa moved to Rolla to live with her sister she applied for work with Dr. Sydney McFarland at his hospital. She had never had any nursing experience but when Dr. McFarland asked her if she thought she could do it her reply was a simple, "I'd like to try, and I think I can." She became his nurse and assisted in obstetrics for the next twenty years before she retired.
Roxa doesn't get back as often as she would like to her hometown but each Decoration Day she comes home, to decorate the graves of her loved ones in Walker Cemetery. When asked to come back and see us last Thursday her reply was "I'll be back on Memorial Day," and although Roxa is now 90 years old, we know she will be back, with flowers to go to the cemetery, because if you know Roxa, you know she has the iron will and determination to keep the promise she has made with herself--that of remembering her loved ones.
Making the trip over to Salem with Roxa were Mrs. Mildred Hallie, Mrs. Edna Dickerson, and Mrs. Laura Reinoehl of Rolla. Mrs. Dickerson and Mrs. Reinoehl are the former Bennett Girls, daughters of the late Judge and Mrs. H. A. Bennett, and they are sisters of E. W. Bennett.

Illnois, and died Oct/20/1985 in Salina, Saline Co., Kansas. He married Lillian Virginia "Tot" Fair Jan/01/1929 in Junction City, Geary Co., Kansas, daughter of Garfield Fair and Eliza Holloway. She was born Feb/27/1907 in Kit Carson Co., Colorado, and died May/26/1985 in Manhattan, Riley Co., Kansas.
Notes for George William "Bill" Welch:
Family Bible, Marriage License. Birth certificate from McLean County, Illinois gives birth date as Sept. 28, 1904. He was born in a log cabin in Heyworth, IL. He was raised on the Current River area in South Central Missouri. The Welch family, his Great Grandparents had come to Dent and Shannon Co., MO from Tennessee. The Welch Cave, and Spring were named for this family. Bill was in the 13th Cavalry, Mounted Machine Gun Troop, at Fort Riley, Kansas. While at Ft. Riley he met Lillian Virginia Fair at a dance held in Manhattan, Kansas Dec. 1928. Three weeks later they were married Jan 1, 1929, in Junction City, Kansas. He was discharged later in 1929.
He went to work as a night watchman at Kansas State University in 1933. In 1968 he retired as Painter Foreman. One of his accomplishments was that he was responsible for developing the "K-State Purple". While working at the college late in 1950 he became "leaded" and was unable to work for a year. Bill mixed all of the paint from scratch. I still have his formulas for all types of paint mixtures and also a few of the stones used in the cans to stir the paint. After he went back to the college to work, the paint was then purchased from manufactures.
Bill was an avid Sportsman and enjoyed fishing, hunting and float trips. I remember the wonderful stories he told about his life and family when he was growing up. He taught us all to hunt and fish just as he did when his family depended on the food he and his brothers would bring home from the woods and streams near their home. He talked about his dad and uncles working in the saw mills, the team of mules "Babe and Blue", and about the "patches" they farmed there in the Ozarks. And he loved the Cardinals Baseball Team.
He enjoyed his family and had great compassion, and love for all people Bill only went to school to the 8th grade, but I recall when I was a child he purchased a set of Compton's Encyclopedias and night after night he read until he had read all of the volumes.
Notes for Lillian Virginia "Tot" Fair:
Tot was an avid needleworker. There wasn't a needle that she didn't know how to use. She Tatted, Crocheted, Knitted, Sewed and Quilted. She was a Tailor and Alterations expert. During the Depression she took in sewing and ironing. Mom loved children and enjoyed teaching the little ones crafts. Fot a time she taught Knitting for the 4-H Clubs in Riley Co., KS. She was an excellient cook and was often called upon to help with Family Dinners and Weddings.
Mom loved life and had a special jest for living it. She worked hard and never seemed to mind. She was the family Decorator, Painter, Carpenter, and could do most anything. Mom and I shared a love for refinishing old furniture and I have many pieces we did together. She loved antiques and had many lovely things she had collected over the years.

She married Ferdinand "Ferd" Aloious Creely Dec/24/1936 in St. Louis, Missouri. He was born in St. Louis, Missouri, and died Unknown in Washington, Missouri.
Notes for Virginia Mable "Mae" Welch:
Family papers, Bible, and Personal papers.
Aunt Mae was my favorite Aunt on my father's side of the family. She invited me to visit twice. Both times I went to Saint Louis by Railway from Manhattan alone. I was 9 and 11 years old. I stayed 2 weeks and came home. I attended a Saint Louis Browns Baseball game, went to the Forest Park Zoo, Busch Gardens, and took a trip down the Mississippi on the "Admiral" Steam Paddle boat. We shopped at Famous and Barr and Stix Baer and Fuller. We did all kinds of wonderful things.
Uncle Ferd was terrific. He was a short, rotund handsome Frenchman and could tell the funniest stories. He was Chief of Police of St. Anns, MO when I was little. Jerry their son was 5 years older than I and I thought he was great. He had all kinds of neat toys and things to do.
Then everything changed Jerry was killed in an accident. Aunt Mae, was never the same again.
Aunt Mae was a teacher. She taught at Sacred Heart Girl Academy, Kindergarten. After Jerry's death she became a "Matron" and rode with Uncle Ferd, transporting Federal Prisoners to the various penitentiaries around the country. She was the only woman allowed, at that time, to ride "shotgun" when Uncle Ferd would take male prisoners.
Aunt Mae, was very demanding and use to getting her way. She like many women in this family was tall.
In her later years she came to Salina to live with my family. This proved to be a very rocky relationship and we did not work well together. When her health disintegrated she went into a nursing home for the last two years. She had to have treatments three times a week and was quite ill most of the time.
Notes for Ferdinand "Ferd" Aloious Creely:
Uncle Ferd was a U. S. Deputy Marshal. He guarded such famous men as Robert Kennedy, Rev. Martin Luther King and others. He was a jovial man and enjoyed eating. He sported a goatee and a beret after he retired, he was quite "a dapper" person. He had a wonderful sense of humor and could tell grand stories. He had a fear of black cats and would go to great lengths to avoid crossing their path. I know from personal experience.
Child of Virginia Welch and Ferdinand Creely is:
108 i. Frank Gerold "Jerry"5 Creely, born Dec/02/1938 in St. Louis, Missouri; died Feb/21/1955 in St. Louis, Missouri.
Notes for Frank Gerold "Jerry" Creely:
Jerry went to Chamonod Boys Academy in St. Louis. He was an artist and at the age of 17 had signed to become a "Rookie Pitcher" for the St. Louis Cardinals Baseball Team.
On President Lincoln's Holiday, Jerry and a friend were on the Freeway near St. Ann's when a man who was drunk entered the highway going the wrong direction. Jerry was dead at the scene. Jerry was tall and had dark hair, he was quite handsome.
